-- After school

Since he was suspended, David couldn't technically attend the drama club meet. However, come the end of the school day - when the meet was to begin - several cars pulled up in front of his house. Out of them poured the entire drama club scheduled for the meeting. There was enough room in David's back yard to stage the wedding. Granted, it was prop less but the props weren't the problem, it was the dance steps.

It was the warm and fuzzy sort of afternoon that David thought was more confined to movies than real life. David's mother reveled in having a houseful of children again. Before David and Sean had come along, David's parents had already raised four children and sent them off so having a dozen high school kids -- and one six month old baby -- had put Cathy Wenham smack back into her element of being a mother.

When David's father got home, drama practice was just winding up, and Karl was feeding Hunter his medicine. David got a bit of a lecture for getting suspended and he was almost grounded but Cathy explained it in her patient way what had happened and David was off the hook with a warning about if it ever happened again.

Karl was even allowed to stay for a while. He even said the young man could have the spare bedroom but he'd need to pay a modest rent. Karl was worried about that but David promised to cover it. Karl had given up his job when his mother had made it clear that *he* and he alone was responsible for Hunter. David's mother also stepped in and offered afternoon babysitting if Karl wanted, so he could go get a job.

With that in mind, Karl gave David a ride into his job, then followed him in and applied. David worked behind the register at a bookstore/coffee shop, Karl was applying for the recently emptied coffee counter position. Since they both worked the counters, when it was slow, they could work on homework, which was handy. Working in the bookshop was a godsend for David with his abacus report since he could make copies free here instead of paying five cents a copy at school. By the time they left, he had copies from all the necessary sources, now it was just a matter of writing it.

Karl drove them home to David's and was greeted by Cath Wenham. Miranda had called looking for her brother so Karl ducked in to call her back. Sean snatched his brother up as soon as he got upstairs, thanking him for the math, apologizing for having foisted it on him, and congratulating him for both standing up to Sala, telling the doctor off, and actually having the balls to ask Cate out. Sean reminded David of the party, even saying that Hugo had called up to invite David himself, directly and for real, so as his 'favor' for the math homework he would get Karl in, too. Then Sean ducked into the shower and David went to get ready himself, laying out his clothes.

Standard scuffed converse sneakers - black. Black jeans, a blue shirt that he was told matched his eyes. The shirt was one of his nice ones - silk, a present from a grandmother. When that was ready, he went to find Karl, already being settled into his new room by David's mother, who was fussing over him like she would one of her own sons. Karl looked incredibly touched, watching Cath Wenham show him more 'automatic' love than his own parents had since Hunter had come into the picture. David moved close enough to take the baby from him for a moment, telling him about the party invite. Karl was politely declining when Cath put a stop to it. "I'll take care of Hunter. You two have had quite the day, you deserve a night out. Homework all done?"

They answered with unison 'yes ma'am's and she nodded, setting Hunter into David and Sean's old bassinet. When Karl tried to protest again that he didn't have anything to wear, Cath sized him up then took him up to the attic. David stayed, both to snatch the shower when Sean emerged, and in case Hunter needed anything. When Sean emerged, he took over Hunter minding and David ducked into the shower. He finally washed his hair and had his missing shave from that morning. Sean had left the zit medicine out so David could take care of that, too.

When he emerged dressed from his bedroom, he was a bit surprised by the sight of Sean, seated in a rocking chair, tiny Hunter cradled in his arms. It was a sight that would have turned any girl at school into mush. Cath and Karl returned then, also. "Davie, I'm gonna let Karl change in your room after his shower," she ruffled Karl's hair and sent him off to the 'kids' bathroom that Sean and David - and now Karl - shared. Leaving Sean with Hunter, David went into his room and for lack of anything else to do, laid out Karl's clothes. He recognized them as a few things his older brother had grown out of and approved of the choices. A dark blue that suited Karl and black jeans. He'd wear his own shoes. David chuckled and found clean underwear as well - his mother was thorough and he could see Karl blushing as she handed them over.

Finally all three young men were ready, and Cath again promised to look after hunter. Sean even left Hugo's number, just in case something happened and Karl was needed. David got shotgun and Karl was in the back of Sean's car as they drove across town to Hugo's party.

David recognized a few of the cars and a lot of the people. He'd never been to one of Hugo's big parties before but the music wasn't half bad. Sean melted away, chasing after a few pleated cheerleader skirts, and Karl and David tried to blend in. There were plenty of faces they both expected to see as they got drinks and found a corner to occupy. John was there, happily settled on an armchair as overstuffed as he was, entertaining several party goers with some story.

Viggo was there with his beatnik crowd and he winked at David at one point, making David turn away. Surprisingly, Orlando and Elijah were there and David actually wondered if they had snuck in. Karl managed to snag a passerby and in a manner foreign to David, extracted the tale of their presence without making it seem like he was jealous or upset.

"Apparently," He relayed to David, "Merry and Pippin over there," Karl had taken to referring to Billy and Dominic that way since a fireworks incident some year or two ago. "Pulled a rather spectacular stunt involving several gallons of silly putty, some of those Styrofoam peanuts and a box of condoms. They didn't want to come without the Bobsy twins," he pointed to Elijah and Orli. "So there we go ..."

David chuckled at that, then stopped dead - Cate was coming towards them. She was hand in hand with a rather somber looking probably-college-student.

"Hi, David," She said sweetly, giving Karl a smile as well but not having his name. "I know you probably think I was just blowing you off but ... here he is," she chuckled sweetly, wrapping an arm around her boyfriend's waist. Karl leapt right in and exchanged introductions, giving David a moment to size him up. There was an easy affection and David figured they were genuine. He shook the man's hand -- Marton as he had told Karl and learned that David's guess was right, the man went to the local college - he'd met Cate when she was taking an advance science class. The four of them chatted easily for a while, then David saw someone he needed to go see. "Excuse me," he ducked away and got to Craig and Ian just in time to see Craig helping to settle Ian into a chair. His friend looked considerably worse than he had that afternoon.

"Jesus, mate, what happened?"

"This lovely young man secured me a place to stay, to prevent me dropping out of sight," Craig smiled, and it was clear that something had happened between Craig and Ian since lunch. Craig gave the older man's hand a squeeze and went off to get him a drink. David settled beside Ian, noticing his arm was swollen under his sweater, then realizing the glimpse of white at his sweater cuff wasn't a shirt - his arm was broken. "I thought George would be at work so I tried to sneak home, get a few things, I don't have much there I care about ... But he had been fired - drinking on the job, probably - so he was there, already pissed at the world." And the beating he'd given Ian the night before hadn't been bad enough. Turns out he'd broken two of his stepson's ribs aside from his wrist, and Ian was now two teeth lighter.

Unbeknownst to Ian at the time, Craig had decided not to take chances and had followed the older man home, and was able to get George off of Ian, even knocking him out cold. They'd packed everything up and hit the road. Craig had called his mother before following Ian, and she picked them up, taking Ian straight to the hospital. Ian was just getting to the talk he and Craig had had after when Hugo approached.

"Your little honey told me what happened, mate," Hugo sat beside Ian, leaning in to very carefully hug the other man, handing him a drink, Craig hanging back a bit and the look of jealousy was not lost on David.

"It's good to see you, old friend," Ian smiled, and David was struck that the light made the highlights in Ian's hair stand out and the looked a good deal older than his twenty years. "I hope you don't mind me and my boyfriend crashing your party," he smiled - having noticed Craig's look as well.

"Not at all, mate, the more the merrier," Hugo chuckled and eased out of the way, letting Craig take post beside Ian while Hugo moved beside David.

"You must be David," he chuckled, offering his hand. "Come, dance! Let's give the lovebirds some time alone," He chuckled, winking at Ian and Craig as he tugged David to the dance floor.

"Uhm, I'm not - won't people think..." Not that he minded, David found his body moving automatically to the music.

"People will think I'm the host so you have to do what I say." Hugo chuckled, his eyes clear as crystal and he didn't smell of alcohol. David decided what the hell. He was gonna get ragged anyway -- so if he did the time, may as well at least do the crime, so he just danced with Hugo, letting their bodies press together as the beat grew more primal, harder. Hugo abandoned his glass somewhere and it seemed Hugo and David's bodies melded together, hands and bodies moving in a fluid, age old rhythm. David was lost to the music and his dance partner, letting it carry him away, feeling the heat of the rhythm, of Hugo, of his own pounding heart.

When the music faded, David realized they had been the only ones dancing and they had acquired quite an audience. Even Sean was cheering. Still partially in the moment, he leaned in and gave Hugo a rather passionate kiss before pulling away, being half dragged by the others, everyone patting his back, complimenting the hotness of the dance. Karl was watching, laughing as David returned, still blushing. "Did I actually kiss him?" he found himself squeaking.

"Yeah. If I knew you could kiss like that I might have said yes," Cate winked and Marton growled good naturedly, pulling her in for a kiss to rival David's.

"Think we best leave this pair alone!" Karl laughed, leaving the two of them to it.

Karl and David made their way outside - noticing one set of bushes that seemed to be growing a sweet smelling smoke. The fresh air helped to clear David's head and he and Karl strolled along. "So ... You saw Ian and Craig?" Karl asked, finally settling on a large stone bench near an abandoned duck pond.

"Yeah. Listen, I don't mean to pry but ... At lunch I noticed something, you and Craig ..."

"Just a crush, mate. I dunno, I was hoping, maybe ... But ... I think he'll be great for Ian, though. Ian needs someone who can take care of him."

"Aye. And Craig sure can ... I hope he can stay wherever Craig arranged for him."

"Yeah. Me too." They sat in silence for a while, the wind disturbed surface of the pond catching the moon's light, making it shimmer. "So, you gonna run off with Hugo?" Karl asked, giving his friend a gentle rib.

"Nah! He's too old for me," he chuckled. Truth be told, though, David wasn't sure what he wanted. He knew that, even including Cate, there wasn't anyone around he really wanted to date. A few people he might wanna sleep with but otherwise, no one he wanted to form a romantic commitment to.

Their quiet was disturbed by Liv. "Viggo!! Viggo come back here!" She screeched, David and Karl both turning to see Liv, walking unsteadily, trying to follow Viggo, who was headed well away from the party, walking even more unsteadily.

"Get lost, Liv!" He shouted, then David could clearly make out the sound of retching.

"Viggo, baby, Oh gross!!" She had apparently gotten close enough to see that Viggo had actually thrown up. She slumped to the ground and Karl and David both rushed over. Liv was only semi-conscious, and Viggo was taking off, looking more like a shuffling zombie than the beatnik king. Karl stayed with Liv while David headed after Viggo.

David knew he resembled his brother, but in the dim moonlight, in Viggo's alcohol and tear stained eyes, David apparently *became* his brother. "Sean, mate," Viggo tried to stand, only to fall forward. David patted his back as Viggo threw up again, then fell back onto his ass. "Oh fuck ..." He looked at David again, squinting. "Hey, David ... Your brother around?" Viggo looked, then held his head when the world apparently spun again.

"No, he's back at the party. Viggo, what's up, mate?" David had no love for the man but seeing anyone in this state invoked sympathy in him.

"Nothin' ... Nothin's ever up ... Your brother ... Big brother Sean, football star of ages ... Straight as a fucking arrow ..."

Ah-hah! Some things over the last two years or so were starting to make sense now. "So, Viggo, when you kept asking Liv how serious she and Sean were ... You weren't trying to date her ..."

"No! Uhgh ..." Viggo looked like he might hurl again but he held it in. "Your brother. Christ I've loved him since diapers. So ... mmmm ... And a good kisser ... and I'm gonna ..." He leaned over to, and David just patted his back keeping Viggo's long hair away from the stream of bile. "Why's he gotta be so straight? I mean, doesn't it run in families? And you're ... well, that dance and drama and ..."

"And nothing. Who Sean fucks is no concern of mine - or yours if he's turned you down. And who I fuck is no concern of anybodies. Listen, you love Sean, have the hots for him, a crush on him - whatever. But get over it, mate. Even if he MIGHT be interested, drinking your self sick - and hanging around Liv is not the way to get his attention, alright?" He dragged Viggo to his feet. "Now I'm putting you in a cab home, mate. Go, sleep it off, think about it." He and Karl got Viggo and Liv up to the curb and Karl went inside to call a pair of cabs. Liv was still mostly passed out and Viggo was making a good effort to try and stay upright. Quite the feat, since he was laid flat on his back. David fished in both their wallets - getting slapped three times by Liv for his efforts - and wrote down each address separately for the cab drivers. Liv, of course, had no money. Viggo had enough for reasonable fare home. They put Liv in the first one. Karl handed the man a wad of cash from their host to get her home. David used Viggo's own money to send him home.

The party was starting to wind down, Karl and David were parked on the front porch, finishing up their drinks, waving goodbye to the departing carloads.

"Davie, I'm going down to the lake with some of the guys. Christopher's gonna drop me home so take the car," he tossed David the keys. David was very glad his brother was being driven home-- Sean needed a man on either side to help him walk steadily.

As often happened at parties, cars left with the same number of warm bodies as they had arrived with -- but it was often a different set of bodies, so several folks were left stranded. Hugo always made sure everyone got home safe, but it was easy enough to fit Dom, Orlando, Elijah and Billy into the back of Sean's car, with another Sean -- a bit wider than the other four - draped across their laps. Once they had all settled, Karl stuck his head out and asked if anyone else needed a ride. An upperclassman named Harry took them up on it, and Karl opened the door, letting Harry perch on his lap as David drove everyone home. While as it turned out no one was especially drunk, they all sung loud, off key drinking songs on the way home.

One by one their passengers were dropped off, until Karl finally had an empty lap and was rather blatantly watching Harry's ass wiggle its way up the walk. "Got his number, too," Karl grinned, flashing a matchbook cover, showing the handwritten number.

David just laughed and pulled away, taking them both home for a good night's sleep.
